Underwater adventures of Chrysemys picta picta

Eastern painted turtle underwater
Acrylic on canvas, 18 x 24 inches (2010)

The setting for most wildlife paintings is above water. This is a an adventure into their watery homeland, where they actually get to use their flat feet as efficient paddles. Anyone who has tried to catch a turtle underwater will know just how fast they can motor.

Painted turtles date back 10 million years or so. Thanks to the Ice Age, the painted turtle evolved into four different subspecies in North America. There are those who bask in the warmth of the south, and those as shown above who have adapted to the stresses of winter hibernation.
