the younger holding the hands of the older
Acrylic on panel, 20 x 16 in (2008)
One of the Hands series of paintings. Two people, holding hands.
Throughout this series of paintings, I have been exploring the shape and structural secrets of the hand. In this work, colour
is subdued, comparing the hands of mid-life with those of the elderly.
Our hands speak volumes about our state of health, our age, and our
occupations. The physical palette of colour changes over time from in-the-pink to less unform colouration, graduating eventually to earthier tones.
The work is about caring for a parent or friend
as they move higher up the aging ladder. It is also about tenderness and being unafraid to touch
and show affection. There is a quiet dignity and joy of being considered worthy enough to have someone selflessly care about you.
