Of all things, paintings or drawings of people are held to fairly exacting standards. We instinctively know when a torso is too long, or a head too small, or when an improperly foreshortened body just looks . . . well . . . wrong.
Some of the rules of proportion can be stretched or broken to achieve certain abstract (even surreal) effects that capture a mood, imply motion or help start a visual narrative.
I wonder what monkeys think of us . . .
